Is writing a real job?

September 14, 2017

Being a writer is not for the faint of heart, the tender skinned or the money hungry.   If you’ve had a book published (traditional or non-traditional) you know that what you make versus what you spend does not make you a millionaire…nor a hundredaire…maybe a dollaraire, if you are lucky.  (But I digress.)   As I begin to market my second book, I am reminded every day when my mailman does not deliver all my royalty checks I thought I should be getting.   I’m sure almost everyone can relate to that defeating feeling.  I also feel guilty for putting time into writing and not trying to work more hours to financially help my family.  It’s guilt upon guilt upon guilt.  Go get a real job screams my inner doubt.   A fellow writer and friend gave me some wonderful advice – write your writing OFF.   Think about it – there are loads of tax deductions we can take that we don’t even think about.  I wasn’t even saving my hotel bills for out of state conferences.  Gas?  Food?  Office supplies?  Anything that you use for your writing because…drum roll please…it IS a real job.  When I sit down to write there is nothing more real to me than what I’m doing.

Treat your writing like it is a real job and it will be.   This requires showing up at the office every day and putting in your hours.   Putting all your time and effort into what you are doing while you are at your writing space.  Don’t let that housework or phone call distract you.   Take your lunch break and your 15 minute breaks, clear your head, feed your tummy, and then go back to work – writing.
